about

The Poor Ground was written by myself, Aine O'Gorman and Jamie Kelly. We wrote it after the bodies of 796 babies and children were discovered in a septic tank on the grounds of the Tuam Mother and Baby Home in Galway, Ireland. May these poor souls and their families never be forgotten.

lyrics

THE POOR GROUND.
Words and music by Victoria Keating, Aine O’Gorman and Jamie Kelly

Verse 1

When I began to love,
A refuge, a dream
I lost my hold on earth,
When I began to love

When I began to love
The brightest star that burned
Just for a little while
When I began to love

Chorus 1
When your essence leaves and your thoughts they creep
And it hurts to breathe cause you cannot tell me
Where you might be found in the poorest ground
Not a single sound only memory

Verse 2
The shadows closed our eyes
Let go our little hands
A sighing larkspur song
As sapphire kisses sand

When we began to love
They found us new as day
Beneath the blessed cross
They carried us away

Repeat chorus with:
We don’t talk
We don’t laugh
We’re your darkest secret

DON’T FORGET US
